In antiquity Kerameikos was Athens' cemetery. Its name was derived from Kerameis a district of the city inside the city walls. Today there is an area of Athens which is called Keramos. It includes Kerameis, the ancient potters quarter inside the walls, and the area of the old Kerameikos cemetery outside the area. I do not think that the Romans were interested in taking over a cemetery. Kerameikos can be condused with Karameikos, a fictional nation in the Dungeons & Dragons game.

Pericles delivered his famous oration at the funeral of the Athenian soldiers who died in the early battles of the Peloponnesian War. This speech took place in Athens, specifically in the public burial grounds known as the Kerameikos. The oration is recorded by the historian Thucydides in his work "History of the Peloponnesian War." It serves as a powerful tribute to Athenian democracy and the valor of its citizens.
