In antiquity Kerameikos was Athens' cemetery. Its name was derived from Kerameis a district of the city inside the city walls. Today there is an area of Athens which is called Keramos. It includes Kerameis, the ancient potters quarter inside the walls, and the area of the old Kerameikos cemetery outside the area.

I do not think that the Romans were interested in taking over a cemetery.

Kerameikos can be condused with Karameikos, a fictional nation in the Dungeons & Dragons game.
