Just 25 years earlier Britain had suffered grevious wounds in losing a whole generation of young men. They knew that if they went to war again the same thing might and probably would happen a second time. Like any sensible people they tried to avoid it which is why Prime Minister Chamberlain tried to appease Hitler, seeking peace. Churchill spoke in the House of Commons, "England has been offered a choice between war and shame. She has chosen shame and will get war".Later the country saw he was right and got behind him completely and whole-heartedly.
