So far as I know, Germany's colours in the Great War were black, white, and red, which were the colours of Prussia. Imperial Germany as it was in 1914 had come into being from the consolidation of the various German states by Prussia under the "Iron Chancellor" Otto Von Bismarck after the Prussian victory over France in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. The various iterations of the German flag from 1914-1918 seem always to have included black, white and red, in addition to Maltese crosses, eagles and other decoration, sometimes in gold.
