Martin Luther objected to the materiality of the Roman Catholic Church. It had evolved into a moneymaking, rather than simply spiritual organization. He didn't believe the Pope could absolve sin any other way than with ablution. Instead, indulges were being given to absolve sins in exchange for a fee.
