The North had all of the factories, as it was more urbanized than the South, which was primarily farm land. This meant that the North had more military arms production capability than the South did.

The North also had a larger population at about 22 million, while the South had approximately 9 million. This, obviously, tends to mean a larger military force.

These are arguably the two main reasons that the North was able to force the South into surrender.
