The main material used by the Romans for footwear was leather and they were highly skilled at making quality leather from cow hides. The Romans did not make only sandals.
The Etruscans and the Romans (along with the people of northern India) were the first to develop a wide range of footwear. The Egyptians, the Greeks and the peoples of Mesopotamia were either barefoot or wore simple sandals. The climate in central Italy was more variable and this promoted the development of various types of footwear. There were light sandals for indoor use, sandals for outdoor wear and heavy boots for travel to colder climates or for the army.
The basic outdoor shoe was the calceus. It was hobnailed and covered the whole foot. It was secured with leather thongs. The cothurnus was a high and ornate and was worn by horsemen, hunters, and people in authority to show their status. The gallicae were adopted Romans from the Gaul. It was a rugged boot for work and for cold weather.The soldiers wore the Caligae (singular caliga), which resemble modern sandals, but were marching boots. They were heavy-soled hobnailed military boots. They the upper was openwork so that the foot could be aired, thus reducing the chance of getting blisters while marching. Slaves were often barefoot and were not allowed to war the Calcei (plural of calceus). Prisoners were often made to wear crepidae, which were made of wood and were heavy, making it difficult to walk.

∙ 13y agoThere are no such things as "Roman sandals". Sandals are sandals and they were standard footwear for all ancient Mediterranean peoples (and for many today). There is no historical record of who first wore them. The sandal was probably invented when the first caveman accidentally stepped on a hot ember and burnt his foot.
