The incredible and unnecessary death, pain and suffering that the NAZI's inflicted on the Russians was the primary reason for the Berlin Wall. Memory of the NAZI atrocities was motivation for the Russians to assure that Germany would never have the strength to do that again. The Berlin wall became the symbol for the Cold War and for Soviet Communism, but the original motivation was to protect the Russian people from German brutality.
