Stonewall Jackson was the most able commander of Confederate infantry of the war. He was one of those men who seem to naturally understand war, he was an aggressive general and he was unshakable in battle. In the Shanendoah campaign, his rag-tag army ran circles and defeated around three armies sent to stop him, each bigger than his own. He and his men were superb on the attack and were hard marchers. Jackson drove his men HARD, often 20+ miles a day, eventually his men earned the nickname "foot cavalry". He play the pivotal role in some of the Lee's most pivotal campaigns where it really is hard to see any other general being able to do the samething.
Jackson's first role in the Civil War was that of colonel commander of Harper's Ferry, where he assembled and drilled five regiments of infantry coming from the Shenandoah Valley, with which he set up a brigade that, after its gallant performance in the First battle of Bull Run was called "The Stonewall Brigade".
Following the raid on B&O Railroad on May 24, 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General on June 17.
On July 21 he participated in First Bull Run, where his action was pivotal to sort out the difficult situation in being and mark the turning point of the battle in favour of the Confederates.
Jackson was an excellent tactical field commander. Though he was eccentric in many ways, he could take Lee's operational vision and turn it into practice. He created a force that marched swiftly, and attacked at the crucial point in the enemy line with surprise and power. His Shenandoah Valley Campaign proved that speed, mobility, and surprise could trump a much larger and better equipped force. His infantry units could cover long distances, and strike unexpectedly so often that they were nicknamed the foot cavalry. One supposition that Jackson's mind complemented Lee's was that, after Jackson's death at Chancellorsville, Lee lost at Gettysburg.
Chancellorsville - the greatest triumph of the Lee-Jackson partnership.
Stonewall was mortally wounded during this battle, in circumstances that are still being debated.
