On the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, he failed to realise that there were any Confederate troops nearer than Corinth, and his army was almost pushed into the Tennessee River.
During the long Siege of Petersburg, he supervised the appalling confusion at the Battle of the Crater, where Union troops had blown up the Confederate positions with a mine. A well-rehearsed brigade of black troops was ready to move into the crater, but Grant and Meade thought that they would be wiped out, and they themselves would be accused of treating black troops as expendable. Disgracefully, they sent in an unrehearsed white brigade, which was wiped out for that reason. If they had sent in the black brigade, the war would have been over in one day.
