One major strength of Union General George B. McClellan was his ability to excel as a operational strategist. His idea for the Peninsula campaign is an example. So was his "three pronged" attack strategy for winning the war. He also had the strength to try to convince US President to wage a war against the enemy's armies and not their civilians. He was best suited as a general in chief without the burden of also commanding the Army of the Potomac. His weakness was being overly cautious. It was a serious flaw.
