In the early Victorian times, only rich boys went to school after they were 10 years old. Prior to this both rich boys and girls were educated at home by governesses. Poor children usually went to free schools or Sunday School. In 1880 attendance at school became mandatory, until the child was 10 years old. There were up to 80 children in a single class, with very strict teachers. School would normally begin at 9 in the morning until noon. The children would go home for lunch and return at 2 until 5 pm.

What were the schools like in victorian times
Certainly all Victorian schools had corporal punishment, but the cane did not come into vogue as the favourite implement until the later Victorian period from about 1870 onwards. During the early Victorian era, 1837 - 1870 the birch was the favoured implement, especially at the great public and boarding schools. By the end of the Victorian era, in the early 1900s, the birch had largely fallen into disuse, and the cane reigned supreme as the implement for corporal punishment in virtually all schools.
