William Taft was considered a failure by many people. One reason was because he fired Gifford Pinchot, The man in charge of the National forest system, making him look opposed to the conservation effort began by Roosevelt.

Taft had some failures such as the "dollar diplomacy", overuse of trustbusting, and dividing the Republican Party.

Roosevelt bought 44 suits against trust during his 7 1/2 years while Taft imposed 90 suits. Taft pressed for a suit against the U.S. Steel Corporation, which Roosevelt supported. Taft also angered Roosevelt by dismissing an ally of Roosevelt. This was the Ballinger-Pinchot quarrel that led to Pinchot's dismissal.

In "dollar diplomacy", Taft wanted to increase the American political interest internationally. It was meant to boost American investments. Washington pressured Wall Street bankers to buyout investments against the influence of foreign powers. In China, Japan and Russia controlled the Manchurian railway. The administration saw this as a possible attempt to disrupt the Open Door policy. American banks were to buy up some of the railroads, but the Russians and Japanese refused. The US also lent money to Latin American countries in order to kept European interest at bay.

The Republican Party lost the House during the elections of 1910. The Democrats had 228 seats and the Republicans held 161 seats. The Republican Party was divided during the 1912 election as Roosevelt took half of the Republican vote. Some believe that because of him the Democrats took the presidency with Wilson.

These are the main failures of the Taft administration.
