One of the reasons that William won was because he made good preperatins. William had assembled a great army with as many as 8,400 people in it. It consisted of at the most, 2,200 cavalry, 4,500 infantry and 1,700 archers and crossbowmen. He skilfully arranged his army into rows-Archers, foot soldiers (infantry) and cavalry- for the attack. The men were stood in a geometric position and if it was seen above you would get a perfect square but with 2metres gap dividing each of the categories. Harolds men were exhausted from the long journey from Stanford bridge to Hastings and were not ready to fight William and his men. Also Harold had lost some of his men fighting Harold Haardrada. Harold did not want to share the booty (treasure) he got after he fought Haardrada, this led the men in his army to thnk that he wouldn't share out the treasure he got after defeating William. As a result some of the army left leaving Harold on his own so he collected untrained, unequipped peasants on his way from the North to the South of England. When Harold arrived at the site of Hatings he climbed up the Sencar Hill. They arranged themselves as a lump many of the foot soldiers had nothing to protect them and all they had for protection were large axes that were hard to carry.
William the Conqueror had married well. Matilda of Flanders financed the building of his ship Mora. He built a fleet of ships to carry his men across the English Channel. The English army had marched to fight the Vikings. William landed in Pevensey, Sussix. He brought with him a group of carpenters to build castles for defense. The archers landed first ready to defend but there were no English soldiers because they were still busy with the Vikings. By the time the English army appeared, William was more than ready.
William started preparign for war 6 months before hand. He started by getting his army together, building armour, boats and weapons.
He had archers, horsemen, arrows, swords, lots of men and heaps of other stuff. He even got some help from France. (i think)
William had very skilled and trained troops in the battle.

Harald lost the battle due to Williams tactics of moving his troops out of their battle positions. Williams idea very soonly decreased his army.
