Medieval kings were usually monarchs, at the highest rank in a kingdom, and the most powerful person running the government. This meant that they had to maintain the laws, hold their borders against invasions, protect their lands from unrest of whatever sort, delegate power and authority to their nobles, and deal with diplomacy with other countries and the Church.

There were exceptions. Some kings were vassals of emperors; examples being the Kings of Bohemia, who were vassals of the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. Some kings were vassals of other kings; Scottish kings were sometimes forced to take vows as vassals of the Kings of England. Some kings had very little power and were figureheads under the control of men who were ostensibly their officers; examples being the last Merovingian Kings of the Franks. In all these cases, the kings had somewhat reduced authority.
