In 1881 Dr. Carlos Finlay of Cuba first proposed that Yellow Fever is transmitted by mosquitoes. 20 years later, Dr. Walter Reed led a US Army team of doctors who confirmed Dr. Finlay's theory. It was the first human virus ever discovered, and the first disease known to be spread by mosquitoes.

The Walter Reed Army Medical Center and The Walter Reed General Hospital were named after Major Walter Reed, an army physician who discovered that Yellow Fever was transmitted by certain types of Mosquito bites rather than by direct contact. This new knowledge was considered a milestone in biomedicine which is why he became famous and had the hospital named after him.
Walter Reed Medical Center was closed on July 27th 2011.
There are quite a few pathologists by the name of Reed, but perhaps you are asking about the more famous Walter Reed. Walter Reed was a pathologist in the US Army whose experiments proved that mosquitos carry and transmit yellow fever.
Walter Reed (1851-1902) was a United States Army doctor who became internationally known after he and his colleagues on the Surgeon General's Yellow Fever commission discovered that the mosquito was the vector for the transmission Yellow Fever. This lead to the virtual eradication of the disease, saving countless lives. In 1902, Reed's life was cut short by complications from appendicitis. His friend and colleague, William Cline Borden, operated on Reed, but was unsuccessful in saving his life. Borden wanted Reed's legacy to continue, and envisioned the creation of an Army medical center that encompassed medical care, research, and education. He wanted the hospital to be named after his dear friend, Major Walter Reed. He repeatedly petitioned Congress, and in 1905, the Army was granted the funds to begin construction on Walter Reed U.S. Army General Hospital.
In actuality, Walter Reed did not invent anything. He was an Army doctor who with a team did research on yellow fever. He is credited with the theory or discovery that yellow fever transmission was caused by a specific type of mosquito bite and not through direct contact. Walter Reed was born in 1851 and died in 1902.
