The Persians Empire gave up trying to impose peace on the Greek city-states and left them to return to their usual warfare amongst each other.

Athens opportunistically converted the anti-Persian alliance into an empire of its own, over-reached itself in a war withe the Peloponnesian League and was stripprd of its empire.

After the Persian Empire gave up trying to impose peace on the Greek city-states in 449 BCE, the Greek cities went back to their usual fighting amongst themselves. This culminated in a destructive 27-year war between Athens and its empire created out of the anti-Persian Delian League, and the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta.

Athens lost and was stripped of its empire and became a second rate power. Sparta dominated in the succeeding ongoing wars until defeated by Thebes, after which Sparta became a second rate power.

The exhausted Greek world was then an easy mark for the expanding Macedonian empire, which then used the combined power to take over the Persian Empire.
