The Roman Empire was the place to be at the time. They were driven by discipline, order, and strength. They were the military capitol of their time, and could take on just about anybody.

They brought democracy (a greek invention) to a whole knew level.

The Romans got three main things from their empire. The first very important thing was revenue. They collected tribute from the provinces in the forms of either cash or goods. Another was troops. Most of the terms of the "Pax Romna" had to do with the provinces providing axillary troops if needed. A third benefit from the empire was security. The provinces could be considered buffer zones, protecting Rome itself.
