Long barrows are from the neolithic period (4000-2000BC) which preceeded the bronze age (2000-800BC) which is when people were buried in round barrows. Long barrows were communal tombs where large numbers of the community were buried, perhaps the ruling elite or family. Round barrows usually started out as a tomb for a single body reflecting the move to a greater focus on the individual and personal wealth which ocurred in the bronze age.
