Why manners are important?
Well, manners are important because they reflect your background. I was brought up believing that manners are important as the "grease" that makes the wheels of human interaction turn smoothly. I was also taught that manners are especially important for people you don't know or don't like. - For people you don't know, manners and the social "niceties" reduce the awkwardness of not knowing someone. With correct manners, you could have tea with the Queen of England, or the new couple in your neighborhood with equal comfort. - For people you don't like, impeccable manners allow you to interact, without appearing rude.

What is meant by good manners?
Good manners are the behaviors you employ when interacting with others. They are based in common sense and respect. They apply to almost every activity of life. Oddly enough, good manners are not noticed as much as bad manners. As humans, we like to be respected and treated as we would treat others. All healthy societies survive in no small part as a direct result of good manners.
