Most of the Saprtan population were women and their children. These were only the women who were chosen at a young age as beautiful enough to live in Sparta, the rest were thrown off of a cliff. Soldiers would be able to pick wives from all of the women beautiful enough top stay, that is when the were old enough. Women would get little to no choice.
They had a large serf population which gave half their produce to Sparta. This provided the resources to support the Spartans and their families.
Spartans most valued honor, to die in the battlefield was a great achivement
Religious duties, keeping control of the large, restive serf population, internal and external security, and preparing for war to meet these challenges.

Yes they did. Most Spartans died at Reach, however some Spartans (such as June), were actually missing along with Dr. Halsey.
They did both. Spartans were fierce warriors. They challenged Athens most of the time to see which was best. Spartans trained warriors, to fight. They were one of the most ferocious city's in Greece, but they had to train the warriors to fight.
Their need to keep a serf population under control, and protect their land.
The Spartans did not grow crops. The serf population (helots) were obliged to deliver half their produce to the Spartan state, which distributed it to the Spartan citizens.
