The North had several decisive advantages over the South in the American Civil War. First, it had over double the population of the South, thus could field many more soldiers than its opponent. Second, it had an even greater industrial advantage, so it could manufacture more guns and ammunition than the South. Additionally, it had a nearly total superiority in naval forces, thus it could blockade Southern ports in a "strangle-hold" movement that would eventually starve it into surrender.
