The incursions by European colonial powers and those of Japan in China overwhelmed the Chinese. They did not have the sophistication in arms and in industry to keep the imperialist out of China's affairs. China also provided a market for goods manufactured in the industrialized powers and China had wealth & products that the colonialists wanted such as silk and porcelain. Also to a certain extent, Chinese officials could be bribed into cooperating with the imperialists. Thus, China's policy of isolationism fell prey to imperialism.
