Hippies mostly like anyone with wild hair or clothes, a holdover from the 60's. Natural look was still in for blacks in the seventies as well as the "militant" look. Essentially meaning wearing a beret and military gear and advocating social changes. Some of the coolest anti establishment figures of this era were black and the bigger the "fro" the more anti establishment you were supposed to be.
