Post (= "after") Mortem (= "death" or "the end")

Also referred to as a Memorial Portrait or Memento Mori. This was the practice of taking a photograph of the recently deceased. It was most common in the mid to late 1800's.

Middle class families that could not afford a painted portrait of a loved one, could afford a photograph. In some cases this may be the only picture of the individual, since cameras were not in wide use.

Historically, as the availability of Photography increased, the practice of memorial portraiture decreased.
