Scribes are people who served as Accountants, or as people who transcribe messages for people. (notice the root word Scribe.) They wrote on clay or wax tablets and were usually servants in important households. Additional duties may have included retrieving library texts. The word Scribe is sometimes used as a name for a writing instrument used to scratch lines in a pliable surface, but the more correct name for their implement is stylus.
