Benjamin Banneker is credited with being the first African American man of science. He was a self-taught mathematician and astronomer, and in 1791 he participated in the survey of federal territory that later became Washington, D.C. Early in life, he built a striking clock with hand-carved wooden parts from his observations of a pocket watch, and in 1792 he published the first almanac written by a black. The astronomical tables that he calculated for his almanacs were published from that year until 1797.

There is no documented evidence to suggest that Banneker belonged to any particular religious sect; however, he is known to have visited Quaker meetings. He believed in the Christian bible as taught to him by his grandmother, white English indentured servant Molly Welsh. He had a strong faith in the "fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man." In the book that I am writing on Banneker, I suggest that he has had two major spiritual influences in his life: Quakers and Masons.
