In the US presidential election of 1836, Democrat Martin Van Buren defeated Whig William Henry Harrison. (The same two candidates ran against each again in 1840, with Harrison winning.)
He ran in 1836 and was elected. He ran for re-election in 1840 and lost to Harrison. He ran as the Free Soil candidate in 1848, got 10% of the popular vote and was a factor in Taylor's election although he did not carry any states.

This change rather gradually evolved- starting in 1828 when Jackson was elected. It expanded in 1832 and 1836 and 1840 was a national campaign for sure.
The Whigs ran William Henry Harrison in 1840 and won .
Harrison ran a "log cabin" campaign as a war hero and a man of the people as Andrew Jackson had done when he won the presidency. Martin Van Buren was portrayed as a wealthy snob who was wasting the country's money.
