Jesus Christ of Nazareth (5 BC- 30 AD) lived in Judea during the reign of the Roman Empire.

Jesus was a teacher, a healer, and believed by many to be the Son of God. However, the Pharisees and Sadducees, the Jewish priests and teachers of that day, did not at all agree with his teachings. The teachings of Jesus were, and are to this day, moral instructions for people to live a life centered on love. These beliefs clashed greatly with the legalistic religion of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

"Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?' Jesus replied: '"Love the Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself." All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments'" (Matthew 22: 34-40).

Along with their disapproval of Jesus' way of teaching, the religious leaders of that day also completely objected and opposed his claim of being the Son of God. After hearing what and who Jesus was claiming to be, the Pharisees and Sadducees were constantly trying to use his words against him in order to convict him of heresy. "When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say" (Luke 11: 53-54).

They planned to charge Jesus with heresy by Jewish law, and, to not only gain the support of his fellow Jewish people to convict him, but also to bring his case to the Roman court. The Pharisees and Sadducees complained to the Roman government that Jesus was not only causing a public disturbance within their region, but also accused him of attempting to create an uprising against the Roman Empire itself. They quoted him on statements he had made, such as when he had claimed to be the Son of God and the King of the Jews. These claims were very upsetting and completely unacceptable to the Roman government who believed that Caesar was God, and that he was the king of the Roman Empire, which included Judea. These religious leaders were able to charge Jesus in the Roman court where he was found guilty on all charges by Roman law. His final charges included heresy, disturbing the religious and political system within Judea, as well as attempting to cause an uprising against the religious leaders, the local government, and the Roman Empire itself.

However, Pontius Pilate, the Roman official who reviewed Jesus' case, clearly believe that Jesus had done nothing wrong. "Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, 'You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death'" (Luke 23: 13-15).

Pilate attempted several times to reason with the Jewish people and their leaders, trying to appease them by suggesting that Jesus be simply beaten and set free. However, the Jewish people, including the Pharisees and Sadducees, were not swayed, and continued to demand his death, yelling "'Crucify him! Crucify him!'" (Luke 23:21). Like a judge in a trial, as much as Pontius Pilate, may have believed that Jesus was innocent, the jury of the Jewish people found him guilty on all charges.

What is symbolic of Jesus in the Book of Zechariah?

Some see a reference to Jesus in Zechariah 13:7, "Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones." They say that when Zechariah spoke of a shepherd, he was really speaking of Jesus, although Jesus is not mentioned by name, nor otherwise identified. Here, then, the shepherd is regarded by many Christians as symbolic of Jesus.
