• in 1919 the First Work War ended and the peace treaty imposed on Germany, in particular, was so harsh that in hindsight is it see as one of the causes of the Second World War.
• in 1906 the Russian Empire was defeated by the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war, shocking the European powers and giving Japan a seat at the table of the Major Powers, although still relegated to a junior seat they probably did not deserve.
• The Boer War (1899-1902) expanded British control in Southern Africa, gave Winston Churchill his first experience of war, and set the stage for Apartheid years later.
