The Union naval blockade of Confederate ports
Anaconda Plan
By May of 1862, the Union had not yet been able to close the ports of Charleston, Wilmington, Galveston, and Mobile.
It was to blocade Confederate ports and intercept war materiel from Europe.
The Union navy was given the task of blockading almost 3,000 miles of Confederate coastlines. Many ports were involved and the Union needed to build almost a new navy to cover the Southern ports.
It depends on how many ports are on the hub. Some might have 4 ports, some might have 8 ports some might have 16 ports etc...
To blockade the Confederate Ports, intercepting the blockade runners and hunt down the Confederate cruisers, which were trying to capture or sink the Union merchant ships, throughout the seas.
It prevented any major vessels entering or leaving Southern ports. This ended Confederate hopes of exporting their plentiful cotton in exchange for war supplies.
