The coastline of Florida's panhandle was explored by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century. One notable explorer was Ponce de León, who is believed to have landed near present-day Pensacola in 1513 during his search for the Fountain of Youth. Another explorer, Hernando de Soto, explored the region in the 1530s, seeking riches and establishing temporary settlements. These explorations marked the beginning of European presence in the area and laid the foundation for further colonization and development along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Mount St. Helens takes its name from the British diplomat Lord St. Helens. He was a friend of George Vancouver; an English officer of the Royal Navy who explored the area in the late 18th century.
European explorers in the 19th century were concerned with finding the sources of Africa's rivers, such as the Nile and Niger. They also explored the Sahara Desert.
