If you are a talking about the Vietnam War, the US was ready for it. The US was ready for any war, anytime, anyplace during that time frame.

The US just had to sort out what type of men and equipment was needed to fight it.

Examples: Originally, the US thought that only Special Forces type men would fight the war. Then just SF and Infantrymen. Then tank crewmen, riverine sailors, helicopter crewmen (the arrival of the gunships), etc. were added to the mix. For equipment; new jungle boots, jungle fatiques, jungle style camoflage helmet cover for the M1 steel pot, and a jungle rifle (M16) were supplied to the men. Then came the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter, and Puff the Magic Dragon and Spectre aerial gunships. Then came the brand new almost all aluminum Airborne M551 Sheridan light tank (officially called the Armored Airborne Reconnaissance Assault Vehicle). For the US Navy, the got the all new aluminum Swift Boats (PCF's), all fiber-glass PBRs, all steel Monitors (river battleships) and a totally newly designed riverine destroyer... the "Alpha Boat", an all steel riverine fighting vessel built in Oregon by the Gunderson Brothers, 50 feet long and officially titled the "ASPB-Assault Support Patrol Boat.
