The North relied heavily on the manufacturing industry while the South was primarily agricultural-based. The North allowed African-Americans to own property and business and be free, while in general the South maintained African-Americans were property and slaves. The North was moving towards a more open meritocracy, while the South still held to some threads of aristocracy.
