Most walked the entire way and many lost at least one family member enroute. I have a diary entry from a woman who had 6 children with one born on the trip. Her husband died on the trip, the wagon they had went over a cliff in the Rockies, and the children and her walked to Washington.

Winter, hunger, some hostile or opportunistic natives, not having shelter. I am sure that they have faced many more difficulties other than this.
