The limited fertile tracts amongst a mountainous terrain promoted the growth of independent city-states. Most of these cities were located on a river or sea, so they used sea communications and developed sea trade. The limited city lands resulted in unsustainable populations, so they sent out the surplus people to seize new land around the Mediterranean and Black Seas, resulting in the spread of the Greek world and culture. This culture persisted for three thousand years to today where Greek architectural styles are still used, and new words are still derived from the Greek language.

Why was the Peloponnesian war important to the spread of greek culture?

Greek culture was not spread by the Peloponnesian War. That war involved the already-spread Greek world which existed from Spain through the Mediterranean to Asia Minor and the Black Sea. The aftermath of the war left the Greek world badly weakened, not strengthened. And it opened the way for the re-mergenc of Persia as a major player, imposing the King's peace to stabilise the eastern Mediterranean, and the emergence of Maedonia as another major player, but that was over half a century later.
