The horse saddle created by General George B. McClellan was an excellent innovation. One thing it did was ease the pressure on a horses backbone. The saddle also had rings that allowed a cavalry man to attach on extra equipment. And, that was the problem. Cavalry soldiers overloaded their horses with so much extra equipment it slowed down and tired the horses. As the Union's horses became exhausted, the Union, by 1864 was able to supply its armies with 500 new horses everyday.

What caused President Lincoln to criticize General McClellan after the Battle of Antietam?

The reasons behind Lincoln's dismissal of McClellan were complex. With that said, President Lincoln had few choices. Ambrose Burnside replaced General George B. McClellan after the Battle of Antietam. Prior to his final dismissal in November of 1862, McClellan was stripped of his army in favor of the new army under General John Pope. Most people believed that McClellan's career was over. However, Pope's defeat at the second Battle of Bull Run saw Lincoln restore McClellan as the leader of the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln's cabinet objected to give McClellan command of the Army of the Potomac, but Lincoln correctly reasoned that this army loved McClellan and would fight their best under his command.

Some staff members in General George B. McClellan were loyal to him, to the point of giving him good advice. One friend of McClellan was General William F. Smith. When McClellan shared his political views with Smith during the Peninsula campaign, Smith advised his friend that he was becoming too political and this might damage his duty to command a large army.

What caused the declaration by Union General George B McClellan that he would win a decisive victory over the Army of Northern Virginia in Maryland to be misunderstood?

When Union General George B. McClellan received Lee's Special Order No. 191, he was certain that he now had the means to defeat Lee's army. In communications with General Halleck, McClellan declared he would win a decisive victory over Lee's forces. At the time, it was interpreted to mean a huge victory over the Army of Northern Virginia. Historians believe that to McClellan, anything that caused Lee to retreat from Maryland would be "decisive". Some of confusion was the result of McClellan's reference to one of Napoleon's great victories.
