James Edward Oglethorpe, a philanthropist and English general, along with 21 other men, created the charter to settle the area, which they called Georgia after King George. Oglethorpe wanted to create a place for debt-ridden English Protestants to start fresh. Their ideas changed as they began interviewing people in debtor's prisons, and they started recruiting skilled laborers and tradesmen instead. Oglethorpe originally intended the colony to be a place with no slavery, but he was outvoted and Georgia became a slave colony instead.
