The United States had led a politic of neutrality, and sometimes isolationism until the beginning of WWII.

At a time when travelling was not as easy as today, why should US be involved in others problems (European in that case), risking Americans lives ? That what the huge majority of Americans thought at that time.

The US entered those wars because they had been attacked directly, (Lusitania bombing in 1917, and Pearl Harbour attack in 1941). The American people took conscience of how threatening the German and Japanase expansionism policies were.

It is "funny" to see that the reproaches made to American government today is its tendency to interfere in others countries' business.
