After the Vietnam war the Soviet Union did not attack or overtly support the expansion of Communism through military means. No war stopped as such but Communist agression was forever checked. Stopping the Communist expansion was one of the USA's reasons to get involved in Vietnam and some argue that the war was successful due to this.

America became involved in World War I due to a variety of reasons: the sinking of the Lusitania that led to American deaths, the publishing of the Zimmermann Telegram which promised Mexico some American territory, and their closeness with the Allies in World War I.

They did go. Some protested while others went to Canada, but there was a draft and if a fellow didn't report he was arrested. Some became medics and I knew one fellow who spent 5 years in federal prison for not going.

I don't think he ever traveled there if that is your question. He was the president that initially got us involved in Vietnam by sending American advisors that included some CIA and some soldiers to advise the south Vietnamese army in their fight with the North after the French pulled out of Vietnam.
