The Prussian army was a dominating force during the warfare of European history. In the early decades of the 18th century, Prussia was developing into a powerful force. They were determined in training their soldiers, and this began with drilling, that would be necessary for upcoming European wars. All units of the army practiced identical drills. Loading and firing their muskets was an essential drill. Each Prussian battalion had to be able to fire five rounds per minute. This was divided equally among the eight platoons that comprised a battalion. The requirement for rapid firing caused the Prussians to abandon the breakage of wooden ramrods needed to arm a musket and these were replaced with iron ramrods.
Marching together in step was also an important component of Prussian training. All troops approaching a battlefield had to be in even rows. This was not easy when there were many battalions involved. To ensure this the soldiers were allowed to only have 75 paces per minute.
Marching formations had soldiers step shoulder to shoulder with each row being five feet apart.
