Edward the 1st
King Edward the 1st lived in Windsor Castle, among other homes and castles. He was born at Westminster palace, and spent some of his childhood at Beaulieu Abbey.
William built castles because he thought that it would show he had power and that he could watch over England.he thought he would be the gratest and he could rule the English people
William the I built them to protect his army, he built 500 castles made of wood, and when he had total control of England and the opposition was destroyed, he replaced these wooden castles with stronger, more stable stone castles. William the Conqueror built castles to protect him and his men from attack by the Anglo-Saxons he had beaten in battle of Hastings. During the first few years he spent over ruling the English he ordered 500 castles to be built. These were of the Motte and Bailey variety which is a bailey (wooden stronghold) on top of a motte (man-made hill.) Once the country was totally under his control and all of his opposition were crushed, that's when he then he replaced the "temporary" castles with more permanent stone structures. Most of these can still be visited today. Also he needed it to show the people of England that he was in control.

The very 1st castles built were called "Mote and Bailey" structions. These were very simple and somewhat primitive buildings compared to the massive stone castles we see today. None survive today as they were originally built of wood which quickly rots away. However, the concept of the mote and bailey was used to build many of the castles we know today. The "mote" was a simple tower built on top of hill of packed earth. Surrounding this structure was the "bailey" which was an open courtyard surrounded by a high wooden fence of pallisade. The tops of the wooden stakes that make up the pallisade would often be sharpened into a point to make climbing over them hazardous. Sometimes a dry or wet moat might also be built around the entire structure. Entrance into the mote and bailey was by either a single gate or drawbridge.
There are many Norman castles that were buit in britain: One is Conisbrough Castle, another is Rochester Castle, Warwickshire castle, Lincoln Castle and many more. These would have been built in the 11th century at about 1070. All Stone Castles built by the normans would have origionally been Motte and Bailey castles as they were made out of wood they turned them into Stone castles.
According to "Cadw" the historic environment service of the Welsh Assembly Government, work on Harlech Castle was supervised by Master James of St George who was Master of the King's Works in Wales.
One answer:the first castle was built by the Normans in 1066, they started securing their position in a similar way, building Motte and Bailey Castles and later Stone Castles.Another answer:There really is no castle we can call the first. Castle design evolved from the earlier designs of forts used by Romans and the people who came immediately after them. The innovations that distinguished castles from those earlier forts did not appear all at once, but gradually, over a period of probably more than a century, between about the years of 800 and 1000 AD. We do not have clear records of this time, and the history of castles during it is very obscure. Without doubt, many castles were built of which we have no record, and what records we do have are very incomplete, so it is hard to trace the progress of the design. We do have a castle that is said to be the oldest still in existence. Châteaux Doué-la-Fontaine, in France, which was built around 950 AD, is considered to be the oldest castle in Europe.Another answer:First castle in England was built around 1070, in the reign of William the 1st
