For many years, England had only a handful of television channels. The BBC had the sole broadcast channel until an independent channel ITV was sanctioned. The BBC added BBC2 for a total of three channels.

The nineteen eighties saw a fourth channel started. It was called Channel Four.

Some years later, the fifth channel began. Unsurprisingly, it was called Channel 5.

These were the only analog terrestrial channels available nationally (except Channel 5 was not available terrestrially over the whole Country) although each had their own regional variations. All five channels are still operating but on digital platforms rather than analog.

It took the start of satellite broadcasts to delivery more than these five national channels.
