To avoid seperation from Britain
The colonists wanted peace with Britain so they created the Olive Branch Petition and when the King rejected it, the Patriots (colonists who wanted independence) rebelled against Britain. The loyalists are the colonists who remain loyal to Britain.
we will be willing to remain within the empire if Britain returns to its former policy of salutary neglect
Regarding the American Revolutionary War, part of the population in the 13 colonies wanted to remain part of Great Britain. They were not an overwhelming number, but it helped Great Britain's war effort to have some of the colonists in favor of remaining part of Great Britain.
That depends on whose side you're on! The British and those who were loyal to Britain (Loyalists or Tories) would have called those colonists rebels or traitors. However, in American history, colonists who were sympathetic to the fight for independence were called Patriots. About 1/3 of all colonists supported England, another 1/3 were Patriots who wanted independence, and another 1/3 attempted to remain neutral.
Loyalist
one reason. They wanted to stay British subjects because Britain was the world's most powerful military power.
To the British, the rebellious American colonists were traitors. Having become accustomed to autonomy during the early 18th century, the colonists had developed a sense of communal nationalism that outweighed whatever loyalty they still felt to Great Britain. One famous American general who turned on his fellow colonists during the war was Benedict Arnold, and his name has become synonymous with betrayal.
