Amphitheaters were used for entertainment. They were used as a place to hold Olympic games. They were also used for putting on plays and acting out things. Sometimes they were used for gathering places when something important had to be announced.

Usually, operas are performed in opera houses. However, operas are sometimes also performed outdoors in open amphitheatres.
While no one has sketched the Globe Theatre or described its structure, the structure of other Elizabethan amphitheatres gives a fair enough indication of the materials and structure of The Globe. It was most probably made of timber, sawed and nailed with iron nails. Flint would have been used where stonework was necessary. Plaster would have been used to fill gaps in the woodwork, although it is unlikely that there would have been any decorative use of plaster. Roofs of the top galleries would have been thatched, later replaced by tiles.
During his lifetime his plays were performed in large outdoor theatres like the Curtain and the Globe, or small indoor theatres like the Blackfriars, or at Court (in palaces), or in private houses or in meeting halls.
We don't know which Greek architect decided to improve on the natural structure of a hillside to carve benches into the sides of the hills for people to sit. This was the first theatre. Later Greeks and Romans built many such theatres (called amphitheatres), many of which still stand. The first theatre in Elizabethan England was called the Red Lion and it was built in 1567. It was a commercial failure and was adapted to be farm buildings. The Theatre, built in 1576, was the first successful Elizabethan theatre. It was torn down because it was built on rented land and the landlord refused to renew the lease.

Ancient Rome built a large number of amphitheatres in many parts of its empire. Rome had the best and biggest ones, however, there were other notable ones in their empire. The amphitheaters were used for the presentation of plays, hold gladiator combats, and in some cases such as the Colosseum, used to execute enemies.
The importance was that Romans needed entertainment, and amphitheatres were a place of entertainment. In modern times, we have stage theatres or cinemas.

Ancient Greek amphitheatres were semicircular: a performance area with a semicircular area for the audience in front of it. Ancient Roman amphitheatres were circular or oval in shape with the audience surrounding the central performance area. The viewing area in most amphitheatres was tiered, natural or man-made, so that those at the back had a relatively clear view of the performance area.
