They believed that they were in the last stage of the world and that the world was soon to be destroyed by the coming of Quetzalcoatl. This is why the Aztecs sacrificed so many people from other regions. They pretty much thought they were in a pre-apocalyptic world in which they needed to fight everyday in order to have the sun come up and not be destroyed by the vengeful Quetzalcoatl.
