Charles Manson, leader of a gang of social drop-outs called the family, obsessed over the Beattle's White Album, and frustrated with his own failure in life, tried to initiate a race war between blacks and whites. He thought he could murder affluent white people and try to blame it on the black community. He failed.

He ordered 7 people killed, sent members of his 'family' to do the dirty deed, and they got caught. Manson and 4 other family members were convicted and sentenced to death. Their death sentences were commuted to life when the death penalty was abolished in 1972.

The simplest way to look at these people is to remember that for all intents and purposes, this was a cult. Manson was the leader of a cult, they were his followers People that study cults know that after time the leader breaks down their defenses. Strips them of their past and their systems of right and wrong, and replaces it with his own morals and standards.

They use, among other things, fear to program the subjects into what they (the leader) want them to be. After that, they have very little impulse to disobey. Most of his 'family' were at one time middle-class kids that lived regular lives. Had they not encountered the likes of Manson, they would never have behaved the way they did. I guess the saying 'pick your friends carefully' is as valid today as it ever was.

The significance of these murders would be that they really did end the 'summer of love'. Manson was a wakeup call for the flower children and for America. What started out as youthful expression ended in Horror.

In conclusion, the nation pondered 'free love' and the price that it cost our young people.

What significance did the Beatles White Album have on the Charles Manson murders?

The song "Helter Skelter" from the "The Beatles" (the White album) is supposed to have set him off or motivated him to commit the Tate murders. A "Helter Skelter" is a fairground ride, but Manson interpreted it something different. He also seems to have read something into "Piggies" that was not there. George Harrison says that in "Piggies", he was only having a swipe at the greed of the middle and upper classes in England.

Were all of Manson family killings due to racsism?

Almost all of them were not. That is not to say that Manson wasn't a biggot, he was. He hated minorities and Jews. But his crimes were not about race. In Maury Terry's expose on satanic cults, Manson ordered the Tate murders due to drug deals and Manson's anger at Abigail Folger and her boyfriend Wojech Frykowski. The common denomiator was in fact a satanic cult known as The Process. The race war was not the underlying reason for the murders.

Did Charles Manson family know who lived at 10050 Cielo Drive before they killed them?

Manson had been to the house on Cielo Dr. months before the murders looking for record producer Terry Melcher. In fact Melcher did live there at one time and he owned the home which he rented to director Roman Polanski and his wife Sharon Tate. Manson was furious after Melcher took a pass on Manson's music. So the murders on that August night in 1969 were not entirely random. The next night Manson ordered the killing of Leno and Rosemary LaBiana, their killings only slightly more random than the Tate murders. Manson had been to a house in the neighborhood of the LaBianca's so he was familiar with the area.

As far as anybody knows, Manson's murders were mainly on the West coast, mostly in Southern California.
