In 1848 gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill by John Marshal. After this discovery people began to come to CA to the gold fields. Thousands came and within 2 years it went from a territory to statehood in 1850.

The result of the influx of population was the growth of gold towns in northern CA in the foothills around and above Sacramento.
