Best Answer

After the Romans had expanded into Campania, the Samnites (who were behind on urbanization) wanted to expand into Campania for better agricultural land as they had been living in the Appenine mountains up until that point. The Romans would not allow them to expand into that territory so wars ensued.

What was the result of the samnite wars?

The Romans decisively defeated the Samnites and they were given second class Roman citizenship (had to pay taxes and serve in military but could not vote or run for office), after this defeat there was no one else in Italy to seriously challenge the Romans.

Why were the samnites and the Romans enemies?

The Samnites and the Romans at first got on well. They signed a peace treaty. The First Samnite War occurred because the Romans decided to help the Campanian city of Capua (just north of Naples) which was under Samnite attack. This led to war. The Second Samnite War started for two reasons. 1) Rome decided to besiege Naples to support the Greek aristocracy of the city against unrest by the Campanian populace of the city which was supported by the Samnites. Naples was supposed to be part of the Samnite area of influence as agreed between the Romans and the Samnites. 2) Rome had set up two Roman colonies (settlements) in another area that was supposed to be in the Samnite area of influence. Roman policy was aggressive. The Romans aimed at controlling central Italy, just north of Samnium (the land of the Samnite) to exercise control over the Samnites who were a strong military power. The Romans started the Third Samnite War by using a Samnite attack on their neighbours to the south as an excuse. Now the Roman wanted to subdue the Samnites.

What are some famous events of ancient Rome?

Some famous battles of Ancient Rome include the Battle of Pharsalus and the Battle of Actium. The Battle of Actium was fought between Octavian (Augustus Caesar) and Marc Antony. Octavian won the battle. The Battle of Pharsalus was fought between Julius Caesar and Pompey and it ended in the victory of Caesar and the escape of Pompey to Egypt.

How many wars did the Romans lose?

Well the Romans really only had like one or two wars. But in the war(s) they fought MANY battles. Some of which were long enough for them to be technically classified as wars, though they weren't. The number of Roman military engagements which were long enough to be classified as being wars was far more that one of two. Here are just some examples: the three Samnite Wars; 2, 22, and 8 years; the Pyrrhic war: 5 years; the three Punic wars: 23, 18, and 3 years; the four Macedonian wars: 9, 4, 2, and 2 years; The Seleucid war: 4 years; the Gallic wars: 8 years. You also need to take into account that in those days armies did not fight during the winter and that even these days wars are on and off battles, not continuous fighting. Wars need preparation of strategies, battles need to be planned and war efforts need to be made sustainable.
