In the beginning of the Civil War the North was fighting to join the South back into the Union. While to the South the war was about defense, to protect their new country Confederate States of America(C.S.A). By the end of the war the North was fighting against the 'Peculiar Institution in other words slavery, while the South was fighting to save it.
In the US Civil War, the South had a number of advantages. Perhaps one of the best ones was the fact that they did not have to conquer the North to win. Their goal for independence would come when the North no longer wished to continue the conflict.
This is a matter of opinion, but the South probably had the better generals at the start of the Civil War.
